Breast Reconstruction
For women who have lost a breast due to a mastectomy or other condition, Breast Reconstruction is a physically and emotionally rewarding procedure that restores breasts to near-normal shape, appearance, and size.
Decisions about reconstructive surgery depend on many personal factors, including:
- Your overall health
- The stage of your breast cancer
Breast Reconstruction is most often performed in a hospital, usually under general anesthesia, and may include a short hospital stay. There are two types of Breast Reconstruction surgery:
- Immediate Reconstruction that is performed at the same time as a mastectomy. This often enables a better final appearance since chest tissues are undamaged by radiation therapy or scarring. Immediate Reconstruction also means one less surgery; however, it may require a number of steps after surgery to complete the process.
- Delayed Reconstruction where the rebuilding begins later. This may be advised for some types of breast cancer. Follow-up procedures may be performed on an outpatient basis.
All decisions will be based on your specific requirements, procedure, and preferences.
